Family Fieldtrip - Battleship Iowa

The U.S.S. Iowa has been retired at the Port of Los Angeles and has been open to the public for the past 6 months.  I had some coupons to use and decided it would be a good time to go while the kids were out of school and my parents were in town.  It was another beautiful sunny day and it was a perfect time to go.  It was exciting to go into a part of San Pedro we have never been before, crossing two very large bridges over the harbor.  It was interesting to see all of the ship yards and cargo ships coming and going. This Battleship served for 50 years in the fleet and 20 years in active duty.  Built in 1940, she served in World War II, the Korean War and the Cold War.

Iowa has the record for firing the longest ranged 16-inch projectile at 26.0 miles in 1989.

 Comparing our guns!

This ship carried 3 Presidents of the United States: Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

This was an excellent day of sight seeing, history and family time!
